Located in Devland Johannesburg, Off N1 freeway its proximity gives its advantages in relation to raw materials used in production of Railway Sleepers. Its accessibility to both staff and main road links to rail locations. Its facilities are over six thousand square meters under roof allowing 24 hour shifts in a controlled production environment. Plant equipped with Engineer & Engineering skilled staff.Method of manufacture starts with designs and calculations which are based on International standards such as EN or AREMA. Modern static’s programmes permit the design of un-conventional sleepers that are not covered by the norms or references eg:-. Three Rail sleepers for simultaneous use with wide and standard gauge, or standard and one –meter gauge. The calculations for a sleeper and the resulting designs draft that defines the outer contour as well as the number and locations of tendons are a decisive pre-requisite when planning. Conservative calculation methods – Always result in better values than predicted theory.

Method of Manufacture:
DSA- DYWIDAG TENSION FRAME SYSTEM. Utilizing a low number of Moulds the process offers utmost flexibility. Conversion of different sleeper types or Rail fasteners system is carried out in a very short time. The wire tendons are tensioned inside a frame. Hereby, tensile forces up to 500Kn per sleeper are possible. The innovative approach of cross four wires of eight tendons per sleeper ensures an optimum force distribution in the pre-stressed concrete structure an added advantage is the process allows and is suitable for high speed railways in excess of 300km/h and wheel set loads above 25kn per axel. Each frame consists of a number of moulds when concrete is poured; the moulds and frame are covered with a steel pallet. The resulting sandwich, consisting of tension frame, moulds with freshly cast concrete sleepers is turned upside down – enabling the moulds to be removed upwards which leaves the tension frame and the perfect concrete sleeper on pallet. The frame is placed with pallet in curing magazine creatively climatized chambers with special insulators covering them closing each stack after a very short period of curing with excellent concrete quality. The tension frame is cut away, which transforms the tensile force of the wire to the sleeper.

Survey of the advantages:

  • Very high pre-tension forces.
  • Very high lateral resistance of the sleeper due to a wasted middle section.
  • High flexibility through minimum mould costs.
  • Low space requirements.
  • High productive levels in shorter period of time.

Fasteners approved by SARCC, Spoor net.
Pandarol, approved fasteners for pre-stressed concrete railway sleeper Industry will be utilized in manufacture of sleepers.

All wires to be used will sourced from local manufactures namely Haggie Rand / Scaw Metals with which Slab Kit (Pty) Ltd has already a long standing relationship of supply of pre-stressing wire.

Production Capacity:
On the off set the minimum production plan is able to produce – Minimum of 180 sleepers per day in a single shift. With curing period used in the latest technology process, having the ability of turn around in 16 hours. With this ability production at its best on single shift – The plant is capable to produce 246 units of concrete sleepers per day. Therefore our normal – Lead time of orders must be given at minimum of 16 working days per 1800 to 2460 of concrete pre-stressed sleepers (P2). Ex – works – calculates as from the seventh day after the date of relevant purchase order given.

DELIVERY & PACKAGING We will confirm in terms of delivery and packaging requirements and institute all necessary guarantees for transportation – with the use of our own logistics facilities located in Devland at our factory.

QUALITY CONTROL Quality Control systems are in place on varied levels – All wire tendons used in production of current pre-stressing activities are certified by Haggie Rand / Scaw Metals. Our tensioning machines are made and serviced at regular intervals by manufacture of stressing pistons, Stress Tech, a local mechanical Engineering firm manufacturing Stress Pistons used throughout the post – tension, pre – tension & pre – stressing Industry. Supplying the accredited market solely for more than 10 years.

Our cement and aggregates are queried by Afrisam (AFRISAM/Holcim/Alpha) and supplied. In our existence thus far Slab Kit (Pty) Ltd has not used anything less than 52.5 N cement; best quality Stone and Crusher Sand cleaned for perfect controls over alkali – Reactions- We have a long relationship with the above companies.

Our plant is fully insured for staff safety & concrete quality from outside insurers.
